iPhone Senior Mode (Assistive Access): how to set it up, and fixes

Assistive Access is Apple's simple mode for iPhone. Many people call it Senior Mode. It swaps the busy Home Screen for a few big buttons, like Calls, Camera, Messages and Photos. A family member usually sets it up, so this page is written for you, the helper.

Quick answers

Is there a senior mode on iPhone?

Yes. It's called Assistive Access. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access and tap Set Up Assistive Access.

How do you get out of Assistive Access?

Triple-click the side button (the Home button on older iPhones), tap Exit Assistive Access, then type the Assistive Access passcode.

Can you call 911 in Assistive Access?

Yes. Triple-click the side button or Home button to make an emergency call. You don't need the passcode for that.

What if we forget the Assistive Access passcode?

If you set up a recovery Apple Account, use it to exit and reset the passcode. If you didn't, Apple says you'll have to reset the iPhone.

Before you start

Sit down together with the phone. Apple suggests a trusted helper sets it up with the person who'll use it.

  • Make sure the iPhone is already set up and signed in to their Apple Account, not yours.
  • Know their phone passcode (the code that unlocks it).
  • Pick an Assistive Access passcode you'll both remember. Write it on the checklist, not on the phone.

Turn on Assistive Access, step by step

  1. Open Settings, tap Accessibility, then tap Assistive Access.
  2. Tap Set Up Assistive Access, then Continue.
  3. Check the Apple Account shown belongs to the person using the phone. If not, tap Change Apple Account.
  4. Add the apps they need. Start small: Calls, Messages, Camera and Photos are enough for most people.
  5. Choose a layout. Rows is a simple list. Grid shows bigger pictures and icons.
  6. Confirm the phone passcode, then set the Assistive Access passcode.
  7. Set up a recovery Apple Account when it offers. This saves you if the passcode is forgotten.
  8. Read the screen that shows how to exit, then tap to start Assistive Access.

Fixes for the questions people ask most

How do I turn the phone off? Triple-click the side button (or Home button), tap Settings, type the Assistive Access passcode, and you can turn the iPhone off from there. Apple lists Airplane Mode and power off as settings you can change without leaving Assistive Access.

Where's voicemail? In the Calls app's options you choose what shows, including recent calls and voicemail. Exit Assistive Access, go to Settings > Accessibility > Assistive Access > Calls, and check those options are on.

The text is too small. Triple-click, tap Settings, enter the passcode, and raise Text size.

I need to add an app or update the phone. You have to exit Assistive Access first. Adding apps, the App Store and iOS updates all need the normal Home Screen.

Tip

Make the triple-click easier: if triple-clicks don't register, go to Settings > Accessibility > Side Button (or Home Button) and slow down the click speed.
